[xwiki-devs] Watchlist icons improvements
Hi. The other thread about the content menus re-organization has deviated to talk about the watchlist, so I prefer to continue the discussion on this new thread. I have made some mock-ups that you can see there: http://design.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Proposal/WatchListButtonsonXE73 WDYT? Thanks, -- Guillaume Delhumeau (gdelhumeau@xwiki.com) Research & Development Engineer at XWiki SAS Committer on the XWiki.org project
Hi, Thanks Guillaume. I really don’t like either 1 or 2 because they take more vertical space (for 1) and they make the UI too crowded. I also don’t think we should have any action button directly in the UI to watch/unwatch. This should be an action in the menus as any other action. OTOH we should have notification icons in the top bar so signify if a page is being watched for example. Thanks -Vincent On 13 Oct 2015 at 17:39:49, Guillaume Louis-Marie Delhumeau (gdelhumeau@xwiki.com) wrote: Hi. Thanks Vincent. I just want to quote Marius about the fact it's a pain to click on some menus to see the state of the watchlist: Watching a page is not like the rest of the actions. It has a **state**.
The other actions (edit, add, administer, copy, rename, delete, export, share etc.) don't have a state. It's the difference between a toggle button and a standard button. The toggle button needs to show you the current state. The user needs to know if the current page is being watched. At first you scan the page for visual clues. There's none. You eventually click on the More Actions menu and see the "Watch..." entry. [...]

As I said I’m not against notification icons. I even think we need them (I can think of Warning icons of admins when the rendering of a page contains errors for example too). But I definitely don’t agree about crowding the UI to add specific watch/unwatch action buttons. They should go in the menu actions. Thanks -Vincent

Re "watch parent and siblings?" it should be "Watch this page and its children" IMO. Terminal pages should have only "Watch this page". If you want to watch the siblings also you can navigate to the parent page (it's not that hard). I don't think "Watch this wiki" should be displayed on every page. We can have it either on the Wiki Index (as an additional entry to the Actions column) or on the Drawer where we list the wikis. So basically for a nested (non-terminal) page the user can perform two actions: "Watch this page" and "Watch this page and its children". And the state can be one of "No watch", "Explicit watch", "Implicit watch" (either the wiki or one of its ancestor are being watched "with children"). Maybe we don't care about the difference between explicit and implicit watch, in which case there will be only two states. There is a little variant with the "badge" displayed in the same line than the last modification date. It does not take more vertical space.

I don't understand how the state of the current page (is it watched by the current user or not?) is related to "notification". To me, notifications are relevant to inform the user that a new message has been received or that a watched page has been modified, but not to inform about the state of the current page. In other words, notifications are about "events", and not about "state". Thanks,

Yes you’re right, I’ve not used the right terminology. I was referring to a zone in the top menu bar on the right (but left of the existing search icon) where apps could contribute new icons, similar to what exists on OSX. For example check the top right of http://img.gawkerassets.com/img/17hbqlh3z3feijpg/ku-xlarge.jpg (they call it menu bar icons). I like this better because: 1) It’s an UIX, it’s apps that can contribute to it 2) We have removed menu entries in the top bar and thus we have lots of available horizontal space 3) We define a standard for all apps The idea would for apps to contribute notifications and states there. Yes, but how do you show, using only one icon, that: * the current document is in your watch list (state for the current document) * there are documents in your watch list that have been modified (notifications) I agree that the top bar is the right place to signal notifications, but I'm not sure it's the best place to show some state related to the current document. I don't understand how the state of the current page (is it watched by the current user or not?) is related to "notification". To me, notifications are relevant to inform the user that a new message has been received or that a watched page has been modified, but not to inform about the state of the current page. In other words, notifications are about "events", and not about "state”.
I like this better because: 1) It’s an UIX, it’s apps that can contribute to it 2) We have removed menu entries in the top bar and thus we have lots of available horizontal space 3) We define a standard for all apps
The idea would for apps to contribute notifications and states there.

Eduard, what you propose is basically the proposal 3: http://design.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/download/Proposal/WatchListButtonsonXE73/p... What I propose, following the idea of Vincent, is the following: http://design.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Proposal/WatchListButtonsonXE73#H4.Wa... An icon on the top bar when the page is watched (like the badge proposed previously), but the actions are still in the more actions menu. Notifications can still be display on the top bar, under a menu with a "bell" icon, such as: https://www.evernote.com/shard/s657/sh/e0f42388-9d3d-4253-83db-1986a2d8a846/... WDYT? Yes, but how do you show, using only one icon, that:
* the current document is in your watch list (state for the current document) * there are documents in your watch list that have been modified (notifications)
I agree that the top bar is the right place to signal notifications, but I'm not sure it's the best place to show some state related to the current document.

I don`t like having multiple icons for relatively the same purpose nor abusing the extra space we have in the top menu. What about joining the 2 icons (eye and bell) and using only the bell item for generic "notifications"? Reiterating: inside the dropdown of the bell icon (the dropdown shown in https://www.evernote.com/shard/s657/sh/e0f42388-9d3d-4253-83db-1986a2d8a846/... ), just above the actual notifications stream, we would also have the 2 watchlist subscription options (i.e. the content of the dropdown shown in http://design.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/download/Proposal/WatchListButtonsonXE73/p...) which would also show their states. This way we would also remove the "watch" actions from the more actions section and we would group notifications and page-watch-subscriptions in the same spot. IMO, it is not critical to always display the information that you are watching the current page and, just like we did in all the other previous skins, it is enough if you can obtain that information in one click (i.e. clicking on the bell icon and seeing the state of the watch buttons). In our previous skins (colibri, Flamingo v1, etc.) we had this information upon hovering the page, space or wiki, in the dropdown. And yes, I guess that at first, it will look a bit similar to proposal 3 ( http://design.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/download/Proposal/WatchListButtonsonXE73/p... ), but with a bell icon and not a dedicated eye (watchlist) icon instead :) Thanks, Eduard On Thu, Oct 29, 2015 at 5:02 PM, Guillaume "Louis-Marie" Delhumeau < gdelhumeau@xwiki.com> wrote:

Hi. I've attached a mock-up of your idea there: http://design.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Proposal/WatchListButtonsonXE73#H5.Wa... Some thoughts: * the notification menu needs to be always displayed to access the watchlist actions, even if no real notification have been sent. So we would need a kind of "new" icon close to the bell (or the count of unread notifications) when there is new notifications (like in facebook: https://www.evernote.com/shard/s657/sh/117fb905-4cd4-4a63-a53d-fbfa5d975ed1/... ) * the actions are relevant to the current page, but are displayed in a more global menu. But we could also argue that they concern the notification area so it's ok and quite intuitive. * it still need an extra-click to see the state of the page (but as before in the first Flamingo's version and Colibri) but it does not cost a lot (nothing compared to a modal box to open). If everyone agrees, I can implement this way. Thanks, 2015-11-02 9:50 GMT+01:00 Marius Dumitru Florea < mariusdumitru.florea@xwiki.com>:

Some thoughts:
* the notification menu needs to be always displayed to access the watchlist actions, even if no real notification have been sent.
So we would need a kind of "new" icon close to the bell (or the count of unread notifications) when there is new notifications (like in facebook:
https://www.evernote.com/shard/s657/sh/117fb905-4cd4-4a63-a53d-fbfa5d975ed1/... )
Yes, we'll need something like this.
* the actions are relevant to the current page, but are displayed in a more global menu.

Some thoughts:
* the notification menu needs to be always displayed to access the watchlist actions, even if no real notification have been sent.
So we would need a kind of "new" icon close to the bell (or the count of unread notifications) when there is new notifications (like in facebook:

Yes, we'll need something like this.
* the actions are relevant to the current page, but are displayed in a
more
global menu.

What about joining the 2 icons (eye and bell) and using only the bell item for generic "notifications"? Reiterating: inside the dropdown of the bell icon (the dropdown shown in
https://www.evernote.com/shard/s657/sh/e0f42388-9d3d-4253-83db-1986a2d8a846/...

) which would also show their states.
And yes, I guess that at first, it will look a bit similar to proposal 3 (
http://design.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/download/Proposal/WatchListButtonsonXE73/p...
), but with a bell icon and not a dedicated eye (watchlist) icon instead :)

Eduard, what you propose is basically the proposal 3:

What I propose, following the idea of Vincent, is the following:
http://design.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Proposal/WatchListButtonsonXE73#H4.Wa...
An icon on the top bar when the page is watched (like the badge
proposed
previously), but the actions are still in the more actions menu.
Notifications can still be display on the top bar, under a menu with a "bell" icon, such as:
https://www.evernote.com/shard/s657/sh/e0f42388-9d3d-4253-83db-1986a2d8a846/...
WDYT?

Some thoughts:
* the notification menu needs to be always displayed to access the watchlist actions, even if no real notification have been sent.
So we would need a kind of "new" icon close to the bell (or the count of unread notifications) when there is new notifications (like in facebook:
https://www.evernote.com/shard/s657/sh/117fb905-4cd4-4a63-a53d-fbfa5d975ed1/...
)
Yes, we'll need something like this.
* the actions are relevant to the current page, but are displayed
in a more
global menu.

Without the configuration area and with some hint text, the area would look like: http://design.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/download/Proposal/WatchListButtonsonXE73/S... Hints could be added (as suggested by Guillaume) and maybe we could use a smaller (non standard) font-size in order to limit its size. Otherwise hitting the configuration anytime you would like to see notifications could be a discomfort. Depends what is our priority: reading or managing the notifications. Without the configuration area and with some hint text, the area would look like:

Hints could be added (as suggested by Guillaume) and maybe we could use a smaller (non standard) font-size in order to limit its size. Otherwise hitting the configuration anytime you would like to see notifications could be a discomfort.
Depends what is our priority: reading or managing the notifications.
Managing the notifications is one thing. Checking the watch *state* for the current page ("am I watching this page?") is another thing, which should not be hidden behind 2 clicks, but that's just my opinion. Maybe the users don't care that much where the current page is being watched or not. Thanks, Marius

Since there were no hints about the functionality, I've iterated providing more details about the configuration and hidding into a configuration, focusing on the notifications: *

We would be back to 2 clicks to find the watch state, which is too much IMO.

Some new mock-ups: With an "?" button after the 3 option buttons: http://design.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/download/Proposal/WatchListButtonsonXE73/N... It opens a popup to explain what it is about (text can be improved): http://design.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/download/Proposal/WatchListButtonsonXE73/N... No extra-click to see the state of the watchlist. Not too cluttered for day-to-day usage. A new user can still now what these buttons are about thanks to the help button. Works for desktop and mobiles. WDYT? Hints could be added (as suggested by Guillaume) and maybe we could use a smaller (non standard) font-size in order to limit its size. Otherwise hitting the configuration anytime you would like to see notifications could be a discomfort.
Depends what is our priority: reading or managing the notifications.
Managing the notifications is one thing. Checking the watch *state* for the current page ("am I watching this page?") is another thing, which should not be hidden behind 2 clicks, but that's just my opinion. Maybe the users don't care that much where the current page is being watched or not.

We would be back to 2 clicks to find the watch state, which is too much IMO.

I'm not trilled about the help modal. We don't use this kind of interaction anywhere else in the wiki. Thanks, Caty On Wed, Nov 4, 2015 at 12:44 PM, Guillaume "Louis-Marie" Delhumeau < gdelhumeau@xwiki.com> wrote:
Some new mock-ups:
With an "?" button after the 3 option buttons:
http://design.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/download/Proposal/WatchListButtonsonXE73/N...
It opens a popup to explain what it is about (text can be improved):
http://design.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/download/Proposal/WatchListButtonsonXE73/N...
No extra-click to see the state of the watchlist.
Not too cluttered for day-to-day usage.
A new user can still now what these buttons are about thanks to the help button.
Works for desktop and mobiles.
WDYT?
Thanks,
Guillaume

Hints could be added (as suggested by Guillaume) and maybe we could
use a
smaller (non standard) font-size in order to limit its size.

We would be back to 2 clicks to find the watch state, which is too
much
IMO.

Some new mock-ups:
With an "?" button after the 3 option buttons:

It opens a popup to explain what it is about (text can be improved):
http://design.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/download/Proposal/WatchListButtonsonXE73/N...
I find the text to be minimal in order to justify the need of a popup. I'm in favor of using Tooltips ( http://getbootstrap.com/javascript/#tooltips)(mentioned before by Guillaume) than a modal for that amount of text. I know there are problems on mobiles with hover and tooltips, but I find it more elegant than using the modal. Thanks, Caty
No extra-click to see the state of the watchlist.
Not too cluttered for day-to-day usage.
A new user can still now what these buttons are about thanks to the help button.
Works for desktop and mobiles.
WDYT?
Thanks,
Guillaume

Without the configuration area and with some hint text, the area would look like:

Hints could be added (as suggested by Guillaume) and maybe we could
use a
smaller (non standard) font-size in order to limit its size.

We would be back to 2 clicks to find the watch state, which is too
much
IMO.
