Hi, After gathering some Action Menus feedback, we decided to go for another iteration for them. My only worry is with long space / page names on narrow screens -> what would happen then?
JS name trimming or CSS overflow: hidden

Looks very good. One idea: the top menu looks so much like Windows Seven explorer address bar that i would suggest the same behavior for the ">>" element: for example when over the one between wiki and space list other possible spaces in a drop down list with the possibility to click on them to quickly go there. Also maybe clicking on the space could go on space main page (same for the wiki).

Hi Thomas, The difference between the menu and the explorer is that every item has it's own menu options, and we need to integrate those too. What you are saying is very similar to a past proposal for navigation http://incubator.myxwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Improvements/ActionMenuNavigatio... but that didn't get approved, mainly because of scalability issues . When you click on the wiki/space/page name it should take you there (or the WebHome). Thanks, Caty

I want to suggest to shrink the Add button, or find another way to emphasize it, because the Add button is over the logo picture. I think we should leave a clear space for the logo, because in certain logo cases this could be a problem (eg. a logo with borders or gradients). WDYT ? Thanks, Sorin

re color size and shape: I've seen it on now, and really, it looks from another skin. It does attract the user, but it attracted me more with a "(wtf), is this skin broken?" rather than with a "ah cool, that's how I create content!". Thanks, Anca

No it wasn't easier before but we have the right to improve stuff.... :) Using the back button is really bad. You can have done actions in pages (script executed) and you would execute it again + you'll need to go back several levels. My recent views panels is a solution of course but it's not integrated so I think we need something better. Again this is outside the scope of this topic but close since there's some need for rationalization between these 3 ways of nav: - top level menu - breadcrumb - navigation history I'm just discussing this since I'd like us to think about how to improve navigation in the future.

Top level menu will be easier to understand for the user, because the pattern wiki/space/page is now more widely used inside XWiki: search results, WYSIWYG pages description ("Located in xwiki » XWiki » Admin"), new Rights UI navigation, etc.

In addition right now it's hard to navigate back to where you were. Example: you navigate to a page, you realize you want to changer your user profile from simple user to advanced user, you click on your user make the change and you don't have an easy way to go back to where you were.
Was easier before? You can use the "Back" from browser; or hit the logo and go Home and see Recent Changes; or use My recent modifications panel; etc.
No it wasn't easier before but we have the right to improve stuff.... :)
Using the back button is really bad. You can have done actions in pages (script executed) and you would execute it again + you'll need to go back several levels.

My recent views panels is a solution of course but it's not integrated so I think we need something better.
Again this is outside the scope of this topic but close since there's some need for rationalization between these 3 ways of nav: - top level menu - breadcrumb - navigation history
I'm just discussing this since I'd like us to think about how to improve navigation in the future.
This is not related to this proposal per see but it may affect it in some ways. I'd suggest we tackle it later on but I just wanted to point it out to not forget it and to have it in mind.

Is there a rule for deciding what page level features are moved to the top level menu vs the features that stay in the edit menu bar?

The rule is: - *page *related actions (copy, rename, delete) in the top level menu - *content *related actions closer to the content
"Access Rights" has the similarity of Wiki/Space "Administration" and also is a page action.
