This shouldn't happen. You sure your internet connection was fine? or may be objectweb had a little down time...

try it agian and check if it happens all the time...

There is not password for anonymously checking out xwiki modules. I just tried the command you gave above and it works for me without asking for any password. Can you please try to see whether your problem is caused by your local svn configuration?
