[xwiki-devs] [Proposal] Folder template
Hello developers. I'm here to propose a new template in XWiki to help users creating container-oriented pages. = Problem = UC1: Users don't always understand the Nested Pages concept. They are lost because they know the concept of Folders and Files and they are used to it, and then we ask them to switch to something new that breaks their habits. UC2: Users often need a page that will be the container of some others (think about the typical "Code" space that we have in all applications) and they'd like to see quickly all children of that container. = Proposition = * Introduce a Folder template the user can chose when she creates a page. * This folder template displays the children of the page ** It could even be a Dashboard with the children pages on the left, and an Activity Stream on the right. == Drawback == The workflow of creating a page that is a folder instead of directly create a folder might be confusing. == Screenshots == Screenshot of my proposition are available there: http://design.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Proposal/FolderTemplate#HScreenshots Please answers your ideas on this mail thread, not on the wiki. Hi Guillaume, I'm not convinced. It's strange to see a Folder template and no File template. I understand the use case but we have the Dashboard template that covers some parts of it. It seems to me that your template offers a dedicated dashboard, so I think it's name should come from that. It's not clear why a dashboard with the children tree and the activity stream would be called "Folder". I also think this goes a bit away from the nested concept we are trying to promote and into the old space/page; folder/file concept. While I'm sure there are users that don't like the change or that want the old model, this is a change we need to assume and try to stick to it. Mixing things together will just confuse everyone. Also the comparison with the folder is mostly as a metaphor. Some people might expect to be able to drag files in the wiki (just like they do in OS or Dropbox or File Manager, etc.) but the behavior of that template won't accommodate for any of these. The template can be put on e.x.o, but I don't think it should be added by default. Also we will need a mechanism to garden the current templates we provide by default and keep just the ones that are effective + let the users know other templates might be available on e.x.o. We could have some UI that search for extensions with the category "template" or something like this. It mostly mean make the flavor picker generic enough to support any category since that's already what it does but just for the category "flavor".
Thanks, Caty
