[xwiki-devs] [Proposal] XE 3.2 Roadmap
Hi devs, Since we're getting close to XE 3.1 final release it's time for defining the roadmap for 3.2. After discussing offline with several XWiki devs (the ones from XWiki SAS) here's a list of items for 3.2 that we came up with. • Features • UI for extension manager + backend extension manager (continued, especially nice XAR upgrades) • Search improvements and especially scoring, French support and wildcard issues (continued from 3.1) • App Within Minutes • Jiras Priority 1 • XWIKI-6504 Convert Panels application into syntax 2.0 • XWIKI-6676 UI does not report failed delete actions of attachments; XWIKI-6623 Attachment upload failure gives no feedback to user • ORACLE fixes • Fixes for HTTPS support • XWIKI-6687 Be able to delete a space from the UI • Jiras Priority 2 • Stats module improvements (Commit code from client projects without changes) • LDAP Admin UI (commit Jerome work without changes) • Clustering bug • XWIKI-6684 Use a predefined Space Template like Dashboard, Livetable when creating a new space • XWIKI-6073 Change stylesheet and javascript extension filename when a modification is done on those • Investigations • Solr • Browser support (IE6, IE7, Safari) • XWiki in 5min • XEM/Workspace features This is of course a minimal list that we're proposing to implement. More could be implemented but we're proposing to guarantee the implementation of the items above. Now we need to put names against each of these items. Can you please volunteer and put your name next to issues you'd like to implement? Thanks -Vincent

I can help on trying to identify Oracle issues with Sorin.
• Fixes for HTTPS support • XWIKI-6687 Be able to delete a space from the UI • Jiras Priority 2 • Stats module improvements (Commit code from client projects without changes) • LDAP Admin UI (commit Jerome work without changes) • Clustering bug
I can work on this (might need some help from Thomas). Actually there are 2 issues in one here: 1) fix the cluster start issue which from time to time forces to stop all nodes 2) implement and publish on extensions.xwiki.org a scheduler job to force cache syns for document cache and lucene indexes
• XWIKI-6684 Use a predefined Space Template like Dashboard, Livetable when creating a new space • XWIKI-6073 Change stylesheet and javascript extension filename when a modification is done on those • Investigations • Solr • Browser support (IE6, IE7, Safari) • XWiki in 5min • XEM/Workspace features

* Rest improvements (Restlet upgrade + re-organization of the rest module - already started)
Just a FYI to let you know that we hit a blocker for the restlet upgrade. We have an API in the annotations module that does not respect the JAX-RS specifications, but that somehow used to work with Restlet 1.1.x. Since the API was wrong wrt JAX-RS, there is no plan from Restlet to have it working on 2.x branches and it will very likely not work with other implementations either. Right now I've left this aside. We will have to get rid of this API in a way or another if we want to move on. More details at http://jira.xwiki.org/jira/browse/XWIKI-6632 Jerome
* Suggest widget improvements and bug fixes (better highlighting, better performance, new options - already started as well)
Jerome.
Thanks -Vincent

I can take this too if no one else volunteers. I see that performance improvements (postponed from 3.1) were not included in the 3.2 roadmap. Nevertheless I'd like to write a few performance tests (probably using JMeter) and build a chart on ci.xwiki.org based on the results so that we can track the evolution of some of the performance indicators like page loading time. Besides that I'd like to start moving WYSIWYG editor functional tests from Selenium 1 to Selenium 2. Unfortunately so far I haven't managed to type into the rich text area when running the tests on FF4 (I can set the content but I need to trigger the keyboard events also; it works fine on latest FF3 though). Thanks, Marius

Hi devs,
Since we're getting close to XE 3.1 final release it's time for defining the roadmap for 3.2.
After discussing offline with several XWiki devs (the ones from XWiki SAS) here's a list of items for 3.2 that we came up with.
• Features • UI for extension manager + backend extension manager (continued, especially nice XAR upgrades)
- Thomas - JV
• Search improvements and especially scoring, French support and wildcard issues (continued from 3.1)
- Sergiu
• App Within Minutes
- ??? (We need someone responsible for the implementation) - Sergiu can help
I'll take this one too.
• Jiras Priority 1 • XWIKI-6504 Convert Panels application into syntax 2.0
- Sergiu
• XWIKI-6676 UI does not report failed delete actions of attachments; XWIKI-6623 Attachment upload failure gives no feedback to user
- Sergiu
• ORACLE fixes
- Vincent to help - Sergiu can help provided issues are reported (Sorin reported already XWIKI-6682 and XWIKI-6683)
• Fixes for HTTPS support
- Sergiu can help provided issues are reported (Sorin to report issues)
• XWIKI-6687 Be able to delete a space from the UI
- ???
I can take this.
• Jiras Priority 2
• Stats module improvements (Commit code from client projects without changes)
- ???
I can take this since I worked on the statistics module before.
• LDAP Admin UI (commit Jerome work without changes)
- ???
• Clustering bug
- Vincent - Thomas
• XWIKI-6684 Use a predefined Space Template like Dashboard, Livetable when creating a new space
- ???
I can take this too if no one else volunteers.
Anca already mentioned that she would like to handle this so I will leave this to her. To summarize, my list for 3.2, in the order of priority is: * App Within Minutes * XWIKI-6687 Be able to delete a space from the UI * Stats module improvements (Commit code from client projects without changes) * Performance tests * Selenium 1 to Selenium 2 move. Thanks, Marius
• XWIKI-6073 Change stylesheet and javascript extension filename when a modification is done on those
- Sergiu could look at this provided he gets enough time...
• Investigations • Solr
- ???
• Browser support (IE6, IE7, Safari)
- Ludovic too here
- Sorin?
- Sorin to give us a status on the various browser support
Thanks -Vincent
• XWiki in 5min
- Caty
• XEM/Workspace features
- Caty/Ludovic?
This is of course a minimal list that we're proposing to implement. More could be implemented but we're proposing to guarantee the implementation of the items above.
- Jerome:
* Rest improvements (Restlet upgrade + re-organization of the rest module - already started) * Suggest widget improvements and bug fixes (better highlighting, better performance, new options - already started as well)
- Caleb:
* I really hope I can find time to work on the cache, namely: ** XWIKI-6170 ** XWIKI-6173 ** XWIKI-6169

Note that being able to undelete a space from the UI is a more difficult use case (I'm not sure you'll have the time to do that for 3.2 and I'd put it below your other items in order of priority) that'll need some discussions I think since there's no notion of Space as of now and only have a document trash and an attachment trash. Hi Vincent and all, I hope that I will have time to work on the hidden document issue that have been discussed recently. I expect to also fix some of the (old) bugs I have reported. For those interested, I am in the process of publishing most of the patches we use in production, on my public forked repository on Github (which is a great improvement IMHO). Some of these upcoming patches (in the hotfix branch) may be applied on master (and I will apply them), some will be just quick fixes waiting for a proper solution (do not know if I should apply them or not), some will be small proposal (in the proposal branch) and some will be obviously too much specific to be integrated. I hope that using Github, the overhead that have prevent me to share them previously will be reduce and that this forked repository will helps discussing what may go in or not more easily. (Side note: I use a forked repos to avoid polluting the original and to allow my collaborator Olivier to commit as well. Warning: The branches on the forked could be rebased anytime when needed to follow upstream properly, and I will keep archive branches for older release. This is the best way I had found to follow up the patches, any comment is welcome.) On Wed, Jun 15, 2011 at 10:15, Vincent Massol <vincent@massol.net> wrote:

Rebasing is frowned upon when public repos are involved. This being said, I agree that the best way to branches commits clean and small, without lots of useless "merged branch upstream/master" commits, is to rebase from time to time. The best way to ask for feedback for individual issues is to create small branches, one for each issue, and make pull requests for each of them. This will allow us to review and comment on the diffs.

My choice is a compromise. Having too much branch could make it difficult to prepare a merged build. The rebase is a choice to have hotfix being the lastest hotfixes on the head of development, this does not means that I will not keep older hotfix branch, so the rebased commit stay in the history as well.

Hi all, I hope I will finally commit the user dashboards in 3.2 XE-923: Implement user dashboard and also hope to have time to work on XWIKI-6684 Use a predefined Space Template like Dashboard, Livetable when creating a new space Also, I would like to help a little here and there on XWIKI-6504 Convert Panels application into syntax 2.0 by turning some of them in macros, which we could also use as gadgets. However, take this with a grain of salt, I don't have too good visibility on my future availability. Thanks, Anca On Fri, 2011-06-10 at 09:58 +0200, Vincent Massol wrote:

• Features • UI for extension manager + backend extension manager (continued, especially nice XAR upgrades) • Search improvements and especially scoring, French support and wildcard issues (continued from 3.1) • App Within Minutes • Jiras Priority 1 • XWIKI-6504 Convert Panels application into syntax 2.0 • XWIKI-6676 UI does not report failed delete actions of attachments; XWIKI-6623 Attachment upload failure gives no feedback to user • ORACLE fixes • Fixes for HTTPS support • XWIKI-6687 Be able to delete a space from the UI • Jiras Priority 2 • Stats module improvements (Commit code from client projects without changes) • LDAP Admin UI (commit Jerome work without changes) • Clustering bug • XWIKI-6684 Use a predefined Space Template like Dashboard, Livetable when creating a new space • XWIKI-6073 Change stylesheet and javascript extension filename when a modification is done on those • Investigations • Solr • Browser support (IE6, IE7, Safari) • XWiki in 5min • XEM/Workspace features
This is of course a minimal list that we're proposing to implement. More could be implemented but we're proposing to guarantee the implementation of the items above.
Now we need to put names against each of these items. Can you please volunteer and put your name next to issues you'd like to implement?
Thanks -Vincent

I don't think that's needed. The question in any case is more a resource issue. To officially support more browsers you need more resources. It's the same issue as supporting N development branches. What would be interesting though is to know where we stand with all known browsers, ie our level of support for each. Some page on xwiki.org with a table like this would be nice: |=XE Version|=IE6|=IE7|=IE8|=Chrome N|=Safari N|=.... |2.7 |3.0 |3.1 Thanks -Vincent

As I`ve already discussed with Vincent and Fabio, I will be taking steps towards making the existing work done for Workspaces as reusable as possible and, if the community agrees, making Workspaces a part of XEM. The agreed steps that I will take are: 1. Expose and discuss current problematic integration points of the Workspace feature and agree on solutions for them. 2. Publish Workspaces as an XWiki extension. Of course, announce it on the mailing list as well. 3. Discuss (partial or total) things to integrate in the platform. The aim is to have Workspaces in 3.2 or at least to reuse as much as possible it's 'good parts'. If you are interested, the Workspaces feature is part of the Wiki3.0 research project and the code can be found at https://github.com/xwiki-contrib/wiki30/ More details should be available in future mails. Thanks, Eduard

Hi, This is great. I'd like to confirm with Vincent and the Roadmap team that we are effectively moving XEM/Workspaces from investigation to in-development in the Roadmap for 3.2. Marketing is supportive of this as well I think as Sales and Projects team. We found at the presentation meeting by Fabio that the current status of the Workspaces work in Wiki 3.0 is much better as is than what we are currently delivering to our clients right now with XEM. Therefore we should move ahead as soon as possible. This means that we are freezing the investigation since the result of it is that we should commit what we have with only small changes as needed, and the the features goes into the Roadmap with Eduard as the responsible developer. Support from the core team will needed to be given as time permits. The roadmap list should be informed if we: 1/ think we can make the commit it in the 3.2 timeframe 2/ if we realize we can't make it for 3.2 Here is my +1 to move to active development on the feature.
