I have no idea why they currently return Strings and not Objects and why they are declared to throw an exception when they catch all exceptions and instead return null when an error occurs...

I need this change to be able to implement http://jira.xwiki.org/jira/browse/XWIKI-4044 (Add support for looking for configuration parameters in XWikiPreferences, WebPreferences and the User Profile)
