About the show all button : 1) I've just copy paste the button so you get the idea, this would have to be skinned. 2) The div with the big icons could be present in every section (hidden) so that when you click on the button they appear immediately (and the section would disappear). I'm then +1 for proposition 2 a.k.a view mode + no admin panel.

* 1) How do you select left panels in the Panel Wizard page since there's no left panels displayed on the image? 2) What does the screenshots look like in 1024x with the left and right menus active? * I personally don't like this solution since a) it means introducing a new navigation feature inside pages when we already have one. (JV says we already have 2 with horizontal tabs but then that would be 3, even worse) and b) it doesn't scale with left and right panels open and c) it's not consistent with edit mode for example and even with general navigation as it is now.
Admin in view mode, without a left menu : http://dev.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Design/ImproveWikiAdministrationLayout2
This works well on a desktop because the move from "Show all" to the specific page and back is fast. We need full Ajax for this mode to work well IMO. This is better than the first option but not perfect.
Admin in edit mode, with a navigation panel : http://dev.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Design/ImproveWikiAdministrationLayout3
+10 By *far* the best solution IMO: * no cramped space * easy to navigate from preference to preference * scalable * consistent with both edit mode and general view mode * no need for another css/styling/new layout scheme * can be easily modified across the board, i.e. if the user styles the panels, you get them styled for the admin too * Focus on the administration while in admin view, no distraction on the sides One note: the Panels screenshot is wrong, it shouldn't have the vertical menu inside the page.

The top solution (autocomplete) isn't good enough since you don't always know the name of your spaces. You need to see them all listed. Autocomplete is a nice to have but shouldn't replace the list IMO. Thanks -Vincent

Hi,
Evelina has finished the ground work on the new administration and it's now time to vote for its layout. http://dev.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Design/ImproveWikiAdministration
[snip] I like the proposal n°3 as well since it's consistent with how panels are displayed across the board. In this configuration we need to make it clear how to get back to the administration page once work with the panel wizard is complete (such as "cancel", "save and go back to administration", "save and go back to the home page" buttons at the bottom of the page). Actually those buttons could be useful on all administration pages but I guess they're somehow planned already.
Other question, how do we display the space selector :

+1 for space selection since you need to know what are the spaces. However when you've got a lot of spaces the autosuggest is useful as well... What about having both in the same place ? [Type space name here... v] + when one clicks on the "v" sign the list of all spaces is shown... Guillaume

If I can't make it easy right now then it will probably be an improvement I'll do for the future. True, this layout won't fit in 1024.

a) We even have 3 navigation features, view panels (navigation panels), edit panels (contextual panels) and horizontal tabs. b) I don't think so. c) I personaly don't like the fact that we are using panels for wiki-level navigation (view) and intra-document navigation (edit) but it's just my POV. Contextual panels are currently used for intra-document navigation (the only exception is the class switcher that some users find confusing), view panels for wiki navigation, I think it's important to differentiate the navigation between the admin sections.

By *far* the best solution IMO: * no cramped space * easy to navigate from preference to preference
We could imagine a dropdown to navigate from section to section in the proposal 2.
* scalable * consistent with both edit mode and general view mode
Talking about consistency I don't like the fact that the panel wizard is different from the others sections. We can imagine other sections that would need some interactions with the view mode as well.
* no need for another css/styling/new layout scheme
Like proposal 2 (current view mode) and 4 (current admin mode).
* can be easily modified across the board, i.e. if the user styles the panels, you get them styled for the admin too * Focus on the administration while in admin view, no distraction on the sides
One note: the Panels screenshot is wrong, it shouldn't have the vertical menu inside the page.

I am +1 for layout 2 + Jv's proposal to have a hidden div for the big icons (which is even faster than ajax and it is exactly like Control Panel in Windows - no need to have the menu anymore). Although layout 3 looks good at first view, I have some comments about it: 1. the integration of admin pages like Panels (which need view mode) can be very difficult (example: for Panel Wizard I had to change layoutvars.vm so that it display the panels for the requested space instead of the ones in "Panels" space). 2. why not letting the user to customize the administration layout as he wants, meaning to choose what panels he wants to have on the left or on the right in the admin page? I mean if the users sees that he needs more room to edit application pages inside admin, he can change the layout...I really don't see the issue So I'm really +1 to keep admin in view mode. -1, the main reason being that the left "tabs" are not L10N-friendly (imagine how the german translation will break out of the allocated space). Another bad point is that it wastes too much space, on small screens there isn't much left for the actual administration part. The only good point is that it allows 1-click switching to another section.
Admin in view mode, without a left menu : http://dev.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Design/ImproveWikiAdministrationLayout2
+0, the advantage is that it provides a familiar interface. The downside is that it does not indicate in any way that this is an advanced manipulation of the wiki (administration). It looks like any other page, but is this entirely a good thing?
Admin in edit mode, with a navigation panel : http://dev.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Design/ImproveWikiAdministrationLayout3
-0, because it is not consistent at all: first screen does not have any panels, all sections have one panel, except the panel administration section, which has normal view-mode panels. Besides, it has the same downsides as option 1 (too much space wasted, L10N-unfriendly).
Admin in edit mode, without a navigation panel : http://dev.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Design/ImproveWikiAdministrationLayout4
+1, because it maximizes the space efficiency, looks different from normal page view (indicating that this is something special), is consistent between different sections and the administration main page, and is L10N friendly.
Other question, how do we display the space selector :
http://dev.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Design/ImproveWikiAdministrationSpaceSel...
There's no good answer here. It depends on the size of the wiki, for small wikis with a small number of spaces, the complete list works, but it becomes unusable as the wiki grows. For example, Curriki has several spaces for each user, and it has almost 40.000 users, so how would at least 100.000 spaces look? (yes, Curriki is a spacial case). So, the best thing would be to have both ways, but only one enabled by default, and the other one commented out in the velocity template, so that if somebody else wants to use it, the changes would be minimal. Another option is to use an ajax scrollbar for selecting the space. Yet another option is to switch dynamically depending on the number of spaces. If there are less than, let's say, 30 space, display the full list. If there are more, then print the suggest code. But for the first release, I think that the easiest solution is the best. We can improve it later, it doesn't make sense to delay this further (1.5M2 should be released this week, and I'd like to see the new administration in it). So, +1 for a static list. -- Sergiu Dumitriu http://purl.org/net/sergiu/

I think the header can be skinned to be more visible, it's also supposed to contain the icon of the current section.

I haven't thought about L10N which is indeed an important point. About consistency, again, having the panel wizard in a special section looks disturbing to me.
