For the second part (field "pre-filter" by first field) I don't think HQL request will be enough and you will probably have to do your own custom displayer for it. HQL is just the last resort. As I indicated in my previous message in your case you can simply indicate the class and the field of the other kind of object where you want to look for possible values to select in your database list field.
